Shaden put a drawing of Hail’s mountains in front of her brother, who was still sorting his books. “Look at this!” she said. “Tell me about it while I finish,” he replied with a smile. She looked at the page, suddenly unsure where to begin.
“There’s a big mountain, and another beside it.” “Do they look alike?” he asked. She leaned closer to her drawing. One peak was pointed, the other rounded, with a line of shadow between them. She began describing each shape slowly.
Her brother sketched what he imagined on a scrap of paper. His picture was different, but the peaks and shadow were close to where she had meant. They laughed at a tree taller than the mountain. “I forgot to tell you how small it was!” Shaden said.
Shaden placed a short description beside her picture, then read it to her mother without showing the drawing. Her mother suggested a clearer word, and Shaden changed it. At their family display, visitors could look at the mountain or listen to it. Some did both.
