After visiting an orchard with her uncle in Sakaka, Leen drew a branch in her notebook. Under it she wrote, “Next time, something will be new.” On their next visit she stood in the same permitted spot, but the branch looked just as it had before.
“I think my notebook has stopped!” she told the grower. He smiled and asked when she had made the first drawing. She turned the page and found she had forgotten the date. She added today’s date and asked what she could observe without touching the tree.
Sitting with her uncle, she noticed the breeze turning the leaves and how their colour seemed to change as they moved. She drew two views of one leaf. It was not the fruit she had hoped to see, but it was something she had missed on her first visit.
Leen came home with a full page. She left space for another visit and wrote down a question for the grower. She no longer needed the tree to hurry. Her notebook could wait alongside it, one page at a time.
