Every morning in Jazan, Jana greeted the plant beside her window. One day she told her aunt, “I look after it, but nothing seems new.” Her aunt suggested drawing exactly what she could see, so Jana began counting the leaves on paper.
Jana dated the drawing and followed the care routine her aunt had chosen for this plant. She did not add extra water just because she was impatient. Whenever she wanted to change something, she asked first.
Days later, she compared the picture with the plant. Behind a large leaf she spotted a tiny green tip. She called excitedly for her aunt, then lowered her voice and laughed. “As if I might wake the new leaf!” She drew the little tip in a lighter green.
When a friend visited, Jana showed her both pages instead of touching the new growth. Together they looked for differences, and Jana set aside a third page. Some stories, she now knew, begin very small and need a patient pair of eyes.
