At his grandfather’s home in Diriyah, Salman noticed a small box on a shelf. He asked to open it, and his grandfather sat beside him and lifted the lid. Inside was no glittering treasure, just a pen with a long scratch. “It must have written a lot!” Salman said.
His grandfather told him how he had bought the pen to write to a faraway friend. Salman wanted to draw it and share its story at a family gathering. His grandfather asked him to keep the friend’s name and parts of the letter between them. Salman agreed and retold only the part they could share.
At the gathering, Salman placed his drawing beside the box and left the pen safely inside. “This is my grandfather’s story, the way he wanted to tell it,” he said. When he finished, his grandfather pointed to Salman’s new notebook. “And where will the story of your pen begin?”
