On a family visit to Diriyah, Nora opened her notebook to draw an imaginary door. Her grandmother said it reminded her of a personal story she had kept to herself, so Nora put her pencil down and listened before writing.
When Nora wanted to share the story with Sara, she asked her grandmother first. Her grandmother chose some details to share and kept others between them. Nora left those details a white space that did not need filling.
Sara suggested a heading: a door from our imagination, and a personal story shared with permission. The page no longer suggested that one door or one account represented every home in Najd.
At the back of the notebook, Nora wrote a question for the next visit, not a ready-made answer. She realized the secret of her visit to Diriyah was not revealing everything she heard, but learning to protect someone else's choice about what to tell.
