Lulwa made a green bookmark for her grandmother’s book and drew a tall palm on it. Two days later she found it inside a different book in the sitting room. Wondering whether the gift had been unwanted, she took it to her grandmother and asked.
Her grandmother explained that she had lent the first book to Lulwa’s aunt and moved the bookmark into the one she was reading now. Lulwa smiled and asked which part of the drawing she liked best. Her grandmother pointed to the little patch of shade.
That evening Lulwa made a second bookmark, leaving more room for the shade. She wrote her aunt’s name on the back and placed the two bookmarks together. They were slightly different, like two readers choosing different seats beneath the same tree.
